The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunities for permanent Lead Structures Engineer/ Senior Structures Engineer/Structural Engineer at all levels to join our award-winning and growing Consulting Structures Team in the South West . The role will primarily involve working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities to work on complex schemes across the UK. As a team, we co-locate with our client at offices in Exeter and Bristol , attending the office three days a week with the remaining days worked remotely.
The work spans from feasibility and optioneering all the way through to design and construction. We work across the National Highways network in the South West, which includes large and unique viaducts, culverts, under and overbridges of varying forms, ages, and complexities. We could be designing a strengthening scheme, completing maintenance refurbishments, or executing safety improvements. The variety of scopes and structures on the network means that no two projects are the same.
This opportunity would suit a developing Engineer working towards Chartership or having achieved Incorporated status, with an understanding of the DMRB and Eurocodes with respect to highway bridge design, strengthening, refurbishment, and assessment. It is a chance to work on structures locally and see the impact of your work day-to-day on a network you would use. You would be part of a team of around 25 engineers locally of varying levels, supported by 350+ Structures Engineers across the UK with a variety of specialisms. Our focus is on developing and growing organically. As an Engineer, you will contribute significantly to this process and gain valuable exposure for your career development.
The role
As a Senior Structures Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Structures schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:
- Leading a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
- Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation all the way to handover.
- Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
- Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
- Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
- Liaising with Client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
- Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of their workload.
- Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work winning function.
- Drive effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us:
- Developed experience and expertise within Structures field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
- An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and Client’s requirements.
- Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
- Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
- Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
- Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
- Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
- Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
- Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IstructE. or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.

This is a key leadership role within our Rail business, responsible for the engineering management of station upgrades, refurbishments, access-for-all schemes, and structural assessments in line with Network Rail and industry standards.
Working in a hybrid capacity from our Warwick office, you will guide a team of engineers and technicians through the full project lifecycle 61ensuring safe, compliant, and cost-effective civil and structural designs that support the operational and passenger needs of modern rail stations.
Lead the civil and structural design of railway station buildings, platforms, canopies, footbridges, retaining walls, and foundations, including both new-build and refurbishment projects.
Ensure structural integrity, durability, and compliance with railway standards (NR/L2/CIV/003, BS/EN codes, Eurocodes) and Building Regulations.
Oversee structural assessments, inspections, and temporary works designs related to live station environments.
Project & Team Management
Manage a multi-disciplinary engineering team, including Principal Engineers, Designers, and CAD Technicians, working on station projects.
Interface with project managers, site teams, contractors, and clients to ensure technical requirements are aligned with project objectives.
Ensure all work is undertaken in compliance with CDM Regulations, Network Rail standards, and company QEHS policies.
Produce and review technical documents including Form A/B submissions, design certificates, calculations, and risk assessments.
Support the technical review of contractor designs and on-site construction methodologies.
Act as technical lead during client design reviews and stakeholder engagements, including Network Rail, local authorities, and third-party developers.
BEng/HND in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
Valid PTS (or willingness to obtain) and relevant Network Rail training advantageous.
Proven experience in the civil/structural design of railway stations, bridges, or public infrastructure in operational rail environments.
Advanced user of AutoCAD, MicroStation, and familiarity with 3D modelling tools (e.g., Civil 3D, Revit, or similar).
Familiar with BIM workflows and digital design delivery.
Strong knowledge of construction materials (concrete, steel, masonry, etc.) Commercial awareness and ability to manage project budgets and risks.
