Product Design Engineer (NPD for consumer/industrial, electrical/electronic products)
Somerset - role is based on site, some hybrid working (1 day a week from home) may be possible
38 hours a week with a lunchtime finish on a Friday!
Salary £34K - £2K (DOE) + up to ,000 relocation allowance (if required)

What skills and experience will the Product Design Engineer need?
- A formal design qualification + a minimum of 3 years’ industry experience in a similar role designing Electrical/Electronic products/appliances for the plastic injection molding manufacturing process
- Full product design experience from concept to manufacture, for small items up to large assemblies
- Used to using CAD software and competent at producing Engineering drawings/schemes
- Good understanding of a range of manufacturing processes and construction methods
- Good appreciation of loads and forces acting within components and complex assemblies
- Good hand modelmaking/prototyping skills to demonstrate proof of principle models

This is a hands-on role where you’ll take concepts from brief through to fully developed designs, applying both innovative thinking and a deep understanding of manufacturing processes. Working closely with UK and overseas teams, you’ll develop stylish, functional, and high-quality products that stand out in the market.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver product design and engineering solutions from initial brief through concept and detail design stages.
- Generate innovative, consumer-focused design and mechanical solutions to engineering challenges.
- Collaborate with industrial designers to integrate creative vision with functional requirements.
- Identify appropriate manufacturing processes and materials during concept development.
- Apply DFA and DFM principles to ensure efficient, high-quality production.
- Liaise with overseas engineering teams to maintain aesthetic and functional intent during detail design.
- Manage critical paths to ensure on-time delivery of the product development pipeline.
- Create proof-of-concept and advanced prototypes for testing and assessment.
- Research materials, processes, and technologies with potential industry applications.
- Work closely with compliance teams to ensure designs meet safety and regulatory standards.
- Attend occasional overseas trips to review designs with manufacturing partners and visit trade shows/events in Europe.
What We’re Looking For
- Degree in Product Design, Industrial Design, or a related discipline (BSc preferred).
- At least 3 years’ experience in a design department, consultancy, or manufacturing environment.
- Experience working with manufacturing facilities, ideally including overseas suppliers.
- Proven track record of developing innovative products from concept through to detailed design.
- Strong 3D CAD skills.
- Experience with plastic product development.
- Confident communicator with the ability to present ideas at all levels.
Desirable
- Experience collaborating with Far East manufacturers.
- Background in consumer product industries.

- Creating 2D drawings for manufacture of parts, at internal workshops and external suppliers.
- Liaising with customers to identify testing requirements, ensuring test rigs are capable of the task.
- Liaising with workshop fitters and supervisors.
- Managing and planning workload, to ensure on time delivery of test rigs.

- Knowledge of testing methodologies, relating to the testing of road vehicles.
- Knowledge of vehicle architecture, components and mechanical systems.
