As a Warehouse Shift Manager at Next, you will be responsible for the efficient operation of a designated shift within the distribution centre. You will lead and manage a team of warehouse operatives, ensuring that daily targets for receiving, picking, packing, and dispatch are met while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity. This role requires strong leadership, organisational skills, and operational knowledge of warehousing.

As a Warehouse Shift Manager at Next, you will be responsible for the efficient operation of a designated shift within the distribution centre. You will lead and manage a team of warehouse operatives, ensuring that daily targets for receiving, picking, packing, and dispatch are met while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity. This role requires strong leadership, organisational skills, and operational knowledge of warehousing.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, motivate, and manage a team of warehouse operatives during your assigned shift.
- Plan and organise daily shift activities to achieve operational targets and deadlines.
- Oversee receiving, put-away, picking, packing, and dispatch processes.
- Monitor shift performance and productivity, identifying areas for improvement.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and procedures on the shift.
- Manage staff attendance, performance, and conduct, including disciplinary procedures if necessary.
- Train and develop team members.
- Allocate tasks and resources effectively to meet workload demands.
- Troubleshoot operational issues that arise during the shift.
- Communicate effectively with other shift managers, departments, and senior management.
- Maintain accurate shift records and reports on key metrics.
- Ensure a clean and organised work environment on the shift.
- Conduct team briefings and huddles.
- Implement and enforce company policies and procedures.
- Manage inventory accuracy within the shift's area of responsibility.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains.
- Conduct regular safety checks and audits on the shift.
- Respond to emergencies or incidents on the shift.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and maintained correctly.
- Foster a positive and productive team environment.
- Work collaboratively with other shifts to ensure smooth handover.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a Warehouse Shift Manager, Team Leader, or Supervisor in a busy distribution centre or logistics environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a team effectively.
- Strong understanding of warehouse operations, including receiving, storage, picking, packing, and dispatch.
- Experience with warehouse management systems (WMS) and handheld scanners.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities under pressure.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations in a warehouse setting.
- Ability to train and coach staff.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Experience with performance management and disciplinary procedures.
- Proficiency in using standard office software (Word, Excel).
- Forklift license (FLT) or experience with MHE is beneficial.
- Experience with Lean or continuous improvement methodologies is a plus.
